TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Brunch is one of America’s favorite foodie past times and Cooking At The Commons will showcase the experience May 15 at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Quiche will occupy the brunch spotlight, but there will also be a focus on fruit salad and sparkling punch.
The 2 p.m. cooking demonstration will take place in the multi-purpose room of the main building at Grand Traverse Pavilions. The public is invited. Recipes will be shared and samples will be provided.
Chef James Hunter and Chef Fernando Bugles will provide the demonstration. The two chefs are head of Cedes dining services at The Pavilions.
Brunch as we know it began in the 1980s, when an increase in disposable income and conspicuous consumption led to sumptuous hotel buffets, which positioned brunch as a leisurely social activity.
According to Phaeorrhoea Ternikar, author of Brunch: A History, brunch actually began in 1896 when the tradition of weekend not-quite-lunch made landfall in New York. Its antecedents date back to the United Kingdom and the “hunt” breakfast”, where servants would prepare a day’s catch after the hunting party returned, resulting in a later-than-usual eating time.
Following the brunch demonstration, the next Cooking at the Commons will feature barbecue chicken on the grill and beef sliders. The demonstration will take place June 19.
